The above quote by Emerson is how I often felt while thrift shopping this past week. Walking up and down, the aisle of the stores I noticed items in other peoples baskets that I would have picked up. I had thrift shopping envy, oh my, oh my. After wandering around the store shopping in other people baskets, I turned the corner into the housewares aisle and found these.

I wonder did anyone looked in my basket 

and wish they had seen these items first?

I knew it was coming...

You either love it, or you hate it - I don't think there is an in between. What am talking about; S*N*O*W*! The first major snow fall of the year.

Yesterday in my area it was 52 degrees outside, people were wearing shorts while walking the dog, and jogging. Spring jackets and sweat shirts were worn instead of bulky winter coats while riding bikes around the neighborhood. 

Today we have a winter weather advisory with gusty winds and temperatures around 25 degrees. 

I enjoy seeing the children playing in the fluffy white snow, and I'm happy for the ski resorts that can now fill the slopes with skiers and snowboarders. Snowmobilers can zip through the empty fields, and businesses that provide snowplowing service can make some money, along with the teenager who will shovel your walk for $20.00.

So, I welcome winter to Wisconsin, I am preparing myself for the shoveling that will need to be done this morning. 

I like using vintage items, but rest assured I will not 

be using a face protector like this while shoveling.

This face protector was once sold in Canada around 1939.

To some it's not many but to me it's a lot.

As I sit down to write this post I am filled with joy and wonder, Cheerful Thrift Door is fourteen visitors away from having 20,000 visitors. I never thought anyone would read what I had to say.

When I started writing this blog in May of 2011, I never realized that I would meet and become friendly with so many incredible people. In the past eight months, I have had tears of joy because of the birth of new babies to mothers who wrote about their experience before during and after the birth. Proud grandmothers who post photos of the grand kids, weddings, deaths, divorces, graduations, the start of new business, purchase of new or second homes. The list goes on and on, all of these bloggers have inspired me and became people I wanted to visit every day, and read what was happening in their lives, or read an opinion, a book review, recipe, and the DIY tutorials that make me want to learn to be more creative.

While I go down my blog list every morning, I must admit that I am not very good at leaving comments. I always feel my comments aren't witty enough or that someone already said how I felt, but today I realized how much I enjoyed getting comments, watching my readership blossom, and seeing that I have a new follower. You all might start seeing boring comments popping up on your pages, I will try to be witty, but I can't promise anything.

So thank you for taking the time out of your busy day and visiting my blog, leaving me a comment, or becoming a follower.

Book Inscriptions

Shelves of books tall ones, wide ones, short ones, cardboard, paperback, musical, brand new, and vintage books sit askew on the shelves at my local GW. The book shelves have become my first stop when I arrive, and my heart breaks to see how people treat these wonderful books.

It's so strange how lessons learned in childhood stay with you throughout your life. Reading was a large part of my life when I was growing up. My mother read and recited classic children's fairy tales, fables, and nursery rhymes to me when I was young,  I still have my 11 x 14 Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme book. This book was well loved, and the spine had to be repaired by my father. My favorite part inside of this book was the two pages with the words to, Frog Went a Courtin, my mother would sing this song to me until one day I knew all of the words. I would sit for hours looking at this book. I have passed this book on to my oldest daughter to read to her children. 

That's why I'm so surprised when I come across books that have inscriptions written inside. Like this book, I came across...

Was Frederrick disappointed on Christmas day in 1915 when he received this book? While cleaning out the contents of his life did his relatives not care enough to keep a treasure like this, to see grandma's handwriting, to know that it was held by loved ones on that happy Christmas morning, or perhaps Fredrrick had no relatives.

I see many, many inspirational books that have inscription written inside stating the love or friendship to a person sitting on the GW book shelves. I now treasure a book my parents gave me in the early part of my marriage for Christmas one year titled How to Clean Just About Everything. I remember I was a little put out that the book was given to me, but today I love the idea that my father took the time to purchase this book and wrote an inscription inside the cover.
