Cherry Picking in Door County

It's cherry picking time in Door County! The weather is beautiful for picking a bucket of cherries for $8.00 at Carlson's Island Orchard in Sister Bay, Wisconsin.

This is a restored migrant pickers' shack that has
been made into the on-site store.

Wonderful vintage crates help decorate the front porch of the store.

A short walk down the path and you arrive at the cherry orchard.

This cherry tree is full and ready for picking.

Carlson's orchard provides fresh picked cherries to the local grocery store daily. We learned that in order to say fresh picked cherries, they must be hand picked. If the tree is shaken and the cherries fall to the ground, they become bruised and the cherries are immediately frozen and will be used in pies.

The cherry is a pretty fruit.

You can have cherry pancakes, french toast stuffed with cherries, cherry salsa, cherry pie, and cherry ice cream.  You get the idea.
Here is a recipe for Cherry Chicken Salad Wraps

Ingredients:
4 boneless chicken breasts, cooked and diced or shredded
1/2 cup dried cherries
2/3 to 1 cup or more mayonnaise
1 cup finely chopped celery
3 tablespoons finely chopped red onion
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup chopped toasted pecans (optional)
4 to 5 (10 to 12") flour tortillas
4 cups spring mix lettuce
Directions:
Mix first 8 ingredients.  Start with 2/3 cup mayo.  Add more if needed. Taste to see if more salt and pepper is needed.  Refrigerate a few hours for the best flavor.  Can be made up to two days ahead.  Add more mayo if salad seems to dry.  Divide lettuce and salad between tortillas.  Roll up tortillas, burrito style.  Cut in half and serve.

That's today's wrap {snicker} for the Cheerful Thrifty Door.
