Thrift Share

I was excited when I found these items....

A brand new, never been out of the box, S'Mores Maker.

I can't wait to have my grandchildren come over and make s'mores with my thrifty find.  Small glitch,  I haven't been able to find sterno for the s'mores maker. I went to Target this afternoon to make my purchase of sterno but was unsure where it was located.  Went to the service desk and asked "Where can I find sterno?" The young lady looked at me rather strangely, and I realized she had no idea what I was talking about. "It's a small can of fuel for under chafing dishes to keep the food warm." I received the same strange look. I don't think she knew what a chafing dish was.  She pulls out her Target walkie talkie and asks "Do we carry sterno?''  I left Target without sterno.

My next stop was Menards, a large home improvement/hardware store. The employees at Menards are always walking up and down isle asking customers if they need any help. Very impressive. I see my first Menards employee and ask "Can you tell we where I could find sterno?"  Yep, the same strange look. I left Menards without sterno.

On my kitchen counter, all washed and waiting to be used sits the s'more maker. My son stopped over and was sitting at the kitchen table when he spots the s'more maker.  "Oh, Declan will love you for that."
I smile and say "If I can find any sterno for it." I get the strange look maybe young people don't know what sterno is.  Is there some other name I should be calling it? If there is please leave a comment and let me know.

Perhaps a small local hardware store will carry sterno.  I do have one close to me but do I really want to visit it again, see my blog Hardware Store No More.

My next find will be for my granddaughter's bedroom and was purchased at Goodwill. This little vanity will be getting a fresh coat of paint. I will showcase the finished piece when it is all finished.

Looking forward to seeing everyones thrift finds.

Treasures from a Thrifty Weekendl

Warm breezes, clear skies, with the temperature in the low 70's made for a perfect day of thrifting. That's what I thought and planned on. You know what the say; the best-laid plans.....

An area in our town is named Allendale and is located near Lake Michigan, with some homes right on the lake front. This is an established neighborhood dating back to the late 1800's, with lovely old home. They held the annual Allendale neighborhood rummage sale this weekend.  Up and out the door early, with visions of good deals dancing in my head. What's the fastest route? I see the signs and stop at my first rummage sale, excitement.

My first purchase of the morning was miss matched shoe horns.  I love the colors and have a pair of boots badly in need of some shoe horns.  The woman running the sale made sure to tell me that they were antique. That became the word of the day.  Wonderfully decorated children chairs with vibrant colors and designs could be  bought for twenty dollars each.  They were antique.  I went to pay for my shoe horns and mental head slap, I forgot to stop and change my hundred dollar bill into smaller bills. Lucky for me a ten dollar bill, was stashed behind my drivers license.
Next sale (after all I still have nine dollars and of course the hundred dollar bill) I stop at had a green scale and the decal says it's made in Chicago, Illinois. No price.  "How much is your scale?' I ask.  You tell me what you would pay for it; it's an antique. She wanted twenty dollars for it.  I liked it, but I didn't love it twenty dollars worth.  So went my morning in Allendale.

I drove to the bank changed my hundred dollar bill into smaller bills, and headed to a church rummage. This was the last day of the sale, and I knew it would be slim pickins. I am so glad I decided to stop because I found my favorite piece.

An embroidered tablecloth with this lovely lady in each corner.

I love, love, adore the crochet lace and these cheerful flowers in between each beautiful lady.

Betty Crocker's cookbooks; 1956, 1971 and 1973. I couldn't resist.

From the1956 cookbook.

My watch and my stomach are telling me its is lunchtime, so I am heading home, and lo and behold I see church rummage sale.  I can't help myself, and I follow the signs.  They are handing out bags as I enter,  and we are told one dollar for everything you can fit inside the bag.

Linen placemats made in Sweden and new with tags, tea towels.

Amish-Butterprint, Pyrex bowl.

Sweet handerchiefs.

Gap lambs wool scarf and hat.

Fisher Price knee and wrist guards.

Colorful childs crochet blanket.
All of this in one bag for one dollar, happy dance.

Love at First Sight

After work, I decided to visit  St. Vincent de Paul's Thrift Shop.  As I pulled up next to the curb, I saw it.  Just sitting on the sidewalk next to the wall.  A vintage white enamel table with chrome legs and a red border design around the edges. I couldn't get out of my car fast enough to take a better look and to touch it.  What a beauty!

The chrome legs were rusted, and the enamel had some chips, but I was in love.  As I mentioned in yesterdays post, the Midwest is experiencing 90 plus degree days, and today was no different.  I remember seeing the bank sign reading 98 degrees as I drove to the thrift store.  I was getting a little damp as I dug to the bottom of my purse for my camera, but  I knew I wanted to take a photo to share with all of you.

An SOS pad and those chrome legs would shine nice and bright.

A cute drawer that was lined in yellow floral paper.

The price tag with the dreaded red dot.  Red dots on any item means it won't be discounted ever :-((

No need for a tablecloth with this cheerful red design all around the edges.

The price was $49.99 which I thought was a fair price, but I did not purchase the table.  I have no place to put it, sigh.  Does anyone want me to purchase it for them?  Let me know.

Thrift Share Monday

Linking up to  Her Library Adventure for Flea Market Finds and Apron Thrift Girl for Thrift Share Monday. I enjoy looking at every ones thrift finds and finding new blogs to read.

At this rummage sale, all books were 50¢ BUT at 1:00 p.m. they shouted everything 1/2 price. I was holding The New Century Dictionary, volume A, but I didn't see volume B anywhere, but for 25¢, I brought it home. I like how it looks and how it feels, it was published in 1937, and I wonder what words did people look up. Perhaps a love letter or a Dear John letter, I hope not.

Lovely graphics in the dictionary, don't you think?

I couldn't resist these beauties either, could you?

5¢ was all it took to bring this sweet how to booklet home.

The glass server was one of the first things that caught my eye at the rummage sale.
Priced at $5.00, I walked away. When things went 1/2 price, I thought for sure it would be gone. As you can see I picked this pretty server up for $2.50.
I enjoy hankies and always have one in my purse.  So these sweeties became mine, 3 for 50¢.
The fabric in the background of the last two pictures has pink borders and flowers. It feels like heavy flannel it is soft and the edges are bound.  I believe it is a table cloth, but have never seen one made with this kind of fabric.

My first piece of Pyrex! I have to admit that I never looked twice at these bowls, but after reading several blogs about Pyrex, well I saw this bowl and snatched it up for $2.99.  No lid but the bowl is in great condition.  Now I am on the hunt for a 1 quart lid for my snowflake bowl.

I enjoyed my time looking for things I loved with my sweet sister. Can't wait to look at all of the other Thrift Share Monday finds. Thanks everyone for sharing.
